Costume design for the premier of Brotherhood Dance’s, Hawa (The Ride) at Abrons Arts Center in Brooklyn, NY. The performance piece is a contemporary myth that "takes up Black masculinity and the politics of adornment as source material for a creative fashioning of the future self." HAWA travels in time from Colonial America to ancient Africa and beyond. The horse spirit is a recurring symbol throughout the piece. The costumes are inspired by African ritual costumes and the Hausa tribe of Nigeria... known for their animal taming and equestrian expertise. Its a mashup of 21st century street fashion, 17th Century fashion, horse jockey uniforms and Black cowboys.
